UK biomethane - sector & coverage
One page for two questions. First, what does the UK grid-injection biomethane sector actually look like right now - how many plants, whose, how much gas, how much deal activity, and what is still being built. Second, how do we know: which registers the plant universe is assembled from, how completely we cover them, and every installation we deliberately hold out of the analysis, named, with its reason. Nothing here is a private data set. Every figure traces back to a public record, and where our judgement has been applied we show the judgement.
Section 1
The sector at a glance
Live counts across the tracked fleet, with an indicative sense of the capital at stake.
Indicative sector scale ≈ £1.9-3.4bn. The tracked fleet's ≈6,235 GWh/yr of largely-modelled estimated output × the £0.30-0.55m per GWh/yr screening band (anchored to the disclosed JLEN to Future Biogas benchmark ≈£0.40m, Aug 2024).
An order-of-magnitude sense-check across the 136 plants that carry an output estimate (nameplate output × the screening band), not a valuation. The platform's own bottom-up remaining-life DCF implies a central figure at or below the low end of this range - the gap is a fresh-fleet equity-NAV multiple vs a remaining-life DCF on an older fleet; see the Valuation page.
Section 2
How the universe is built
No single UK register lists every biomethane plant. We build the fleet as the reconciled union of several, and document every judgement call.
Our plant universe is the reconciled union of public registers - the Green Gas Certification Scheme (the operating, certificate-selling fleet), the Ofgem NDRHI accreditation register (the subsidy and cliff record), and Companies House / Environment Agency for entity and permit confirmation. No single register is complete on its own, so we cross-reference them.
Why a plant can be on a register but not in our fleet
The Ofgem NDRHI register lists subsidy accreditations, not physical plants. One plant can hold several accreditations; some accreditations were provisional and never built; some belong to sites that have since ceased. We resolve each Ofgem entry to a real, operating asset, or we set it aside with a reason. Section 4 below lists the 60 Ofgem installations currently held out of the operating-asset analysis, in full.
Conversely, roughly a sixth of our plants never appear on NDRHI at all - the newest plants accredited under the successor GGSS scheme (NDRHI closed to new entrants), and industrial or water-utility injectors that monetised through transport fuel rather than the heat subsidy. That is why we do not treat any one register as the definitive list.

Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) · scheme-level context
14 applicationsGGSS is the scheme that replaced the RHI for new biomethane plants (RHI closed to new entrants in 2021). It pays a tariff on injected biomethane for 15 years. Ofgem disclosed the GGSS applications to us as at 10 July 2026, but, unlike the NDRHI register, this data is anonymised: each application is identified only by a number, with no installation name or company number. We therefore present it as scheme-level context and do not attach any application to a named plant - doing so would be guesswork. We have asked Ofgem to provide the named version.

The certificate market - offtake & trading
Who is selling the green-gas certificates the fleet produces, and which of those sellers are producers we already track.
What an RGGO actually is
Biomethane injected into the gas grid is physically indistinguishable from fossil gas once it is in the pipe. The green part is sold separately, as a certificate. For every unit of biomethane a producer injects, the Green Gas Certification Scheme issues a Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RGGO), and it is the RGGO - not the molecule - that a supplier buys to sell a customer a “green gas” tariff, or that a corporate buys to back a carbon claim.
An offtake is the contract that moves that output: a producer agrees to sell its gas and/or its certificates to a counterparty, often for years at a time, and the price and length of that contract is usually the single biggest driver of what the plant is worth. A trader sits in between, buying certificates from producers and reselling them to suppliers and corporates.
The register below is the GGCS list of companies with green gas certificates available to sell - the trading and offtake counterparty universe. It is not a list of plants or assets for sale, and it must never be read as one. Where a name on it is also a producer or owner group we track, that is vertical integration: the same party making the gas and selling the certificates.

The sellers register is an exception. Section 6 above is sourced from the Green Gas Certification Scheme “Green Gas - For Sale” register. Only the cross-reference against the tracked fleet - which runs on Companies House and public-register data, by company-name match, and is indicative only - carries the OGL attribution above.
